SOME HELPFUL NOTES AND HINTS ON DIGITAL PHOTOS

Most digital cameras produce very high resolution photos. High resolution benefits those who are interested in enlarging photos to sizes of 8x10, 11x14, or 16x20. Furthermore, you can enlarge those pictures without losing any photo detail. That is NOT our objective when sending photos in an email, or for viewing it on a web site. For email purposes, the objective is to send as many photos as you can in ONE email. By default, most digital cameras will produce photo files with resolutions that approach or surpass 2000x1600 pixels. By comparison, most computer monitors top out at resolutions of 1280x1024. A 2000x1600 photo can produce photo file sizes that are typically 1.5 to 3 MB (megabytes). With file sizes that large, you will be limited to how many you can send in an email. In many cases, even 2 or 3 large photo files will take forever to send... and that email still has to get to its destination. The two biggest reasons that your email might not get sent, or may not be received, will include: 1.) SPAM filters 2.) Mailbox Size Limitations.

Photography software is included with the purchase of many digital cameras. There are also software programs available in Microsoft and Apple that are used for photo editing. These programs will allow you to edit your pictures. Also, digital cameras today allow you to edit your pictures from within the camera (well, actually, from within the memory card). If you edit pictures on your camera, be sure you download the original photos to your computer. Some cameras allow you to make a duplicate on the camera (memory card).... in that case, edit the duplicate photo. The only editing that will be necessary for emailing will be to resize your photo to a smaller size.

Some suggested sizes for emailing: 640x480, 800x600  (800x600 is the most ideal size for web site photos)

If you like big font sizes on your computer, chances are your computer screen resolution is at or near 800x600. In that case, a photo that is formatted (sized) to 800x600 would fill your entire screen. A photo that is 800x600 (typically 50 to 150 kilobytes in file size) can be as much as 15 to 30 times smaller than a photo with 2000x1600 resolution.

We can still enjoy your pictures even if it doesn't fill our screens. So remember.... try to keep it small.... but not too small. Hopefully, these notes and hints will help you send pictures more effectively, and save you time in emailing your pictures (and save me time posting them!!). Thank you for providing our web site with fun Marlin photos for all of our web site visitors.
